Shop Assistant
Position Description
The Shop Assistant is an entry level position whose primary responsibility is learning and skill acquisition. The position is temporary with the goal that by the end of their time they will have the basic understanding of tools and materials required for theatrical carpentry, painting, and/or technical direction. The Assistant will use basic skills, once learned, to assist in the fabrication of scenery. They may spend some of their time shadowing/assisting carpenters, painters, or TDs, in order to learn different techniques and processes. They report to all other shop personnel where appropriate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Learn from all levels of department personnel.
Learn the use of and comply with instructions surrounding safety and PPE.
Learn the basics of drafting, layouts, mathematics, and material identification.
Learn the basics of tool and hardware usage.
Learn the basics of theatrical build and paint techniques.
Qualifications: You are an ideal candidate if you:
Have a strong interest in pursuing scenic carpentry, painting, or technical direction as a career.
Are able to learn new skills and processes quickly.
Engage in all assigned tasks, including material handling and shop maintenance.
Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
Have the ability to lift 50lbs (preferred).
Enjoy working in a creative, collaborative, fast-paced atmosphere and contribute to the creation of a positive work environment.
Share a respect for diverse backgrounds and voices and a commitment to inclusion and equity.
Special Environmental Factors:
The shop spaces are hot in the summer and require extended standing and walking on hard surfaces.
Work for Cal Scenic occasionally includes exposure to sunlight and hot weather for extended periods of time.
Variable schedule, requires evening and weekend hours during load-ins and technical rehearsals.
Some local travel is required between the scene shop in Concord and various theaters throughout the Bay Area.

Reports to the Shop Supervisor
Compensation:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a contract length of up to one year. Salary range is $18.36/hour, with benefits.
